David Carlton is associate professor emeritus at Vanderbilt University. He is the author of Mill and Town in South Carolina, 1880–1920 and co-authored, with Peter A. Coclanis, The South, the Nation, and the World: Essays in Southern Economic Development. As a research fellow at the Global Research Institute of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010–2011, he was part of an interdisciplinary team seeking understanding of the industrial crisis facing North Carolina and the South.

Edwards Middle School in Central, SC. A graduate of Transylvania University in Lexington, KY with a degree in Middle Grades Education, Dewayne lives in Clemson, SC with his wife, Dr. Bridget Trogden and son Jacob.
